Finny died from a broken leg because he/she wasn't able to run or get to it's food bowl/water bottle.
Gene feels better because it relieves him from the guilt he feels for causing Finny's injury. By attributing malicious intentions to Finny, Gene is able to shift the blame away from himself and justify his own actions. It allows Gene to rationalize his betrayal and maintain his sense of superiority.
In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, Finny tells Gene that the war is fake; that it is a fictional story made by old fat men. Finny also says that he knows that it is fake because he has suffered.
Finny had fallen from a tree and severely injured his leg, leading to the discovery of a genetic condition that prevented him from being able to join the military. The phrase "Then you saw him yourself" refers to Gene witnessing the accident that led to Finny's injury.
Brinker barges into Finny and Gene's room after campus hours and forces them to go with him. He brings them to the assembly room that he was able to open using the keys he had from the school. Deuces, I'm out.
Finny's response to his injury is almost as if it doesn't effect him at all. He plays it off as if it's nothing. Finny sees it just as an unfortunate accident. He also says that he doesn't remember the details, which makes sense because Hebrew focused on the fall, but at the same time he also hinted at a feeling he had. In his gut he feels that Gene had something to do with it since he was the last thing he say before falling into the river. This is believable in this situation, he usually jumped of the limb perfectly. Gene later has an epiphany about Finny and himself. Funny wants him to succeed an he never did anything to keep Gene behind in school or anything else for that matter. All along Gene thought that he was in a competition with Finny to be the best, but Finny proved him wrong. This made Gene feel inferior because he is not a big enough person to admit the same. Finny always had a hint of this attitude. He has told Gene before that a game is just a game, and nothing more. He didn't want to keep Gene back from doing well in school. Funny also exposed his true feelings to Gene the night they slept at the beach, something that Gene would never be able to do. Finny never really had a competitive side toward anybody but himself. His actions and feeling about his injury further express that. His lack of anger hinted that he was content about everything he had already accomplished in his life so far.
Finny establishes a separate peace by creating a story that fat men created the war. In doing so he was able to say that all the horrible stuff going on wasn't real it was all make believe. Really he was just indenyle. He believed that all people were seriously good and so HE himself was living in a separate peace.
