The epiglottis is a flap of cartilage located at the base of the tongue that functions to prevent food and liquid from entering the windpipe (trachea) during swallowing. When you swallow, the epiglottis folds down over the larynx, directing the food and liquids into the esophagus. This protective mechanism helps to ensure that the airway remains clear for breathing and prevents aspiration.
