I was having a problem with my freezer-it was frosting up along the back wall and making a buzzing sound. The repairman replace the "Bi-Metal" which is a little device with 2 wires that works like a switch. This worked- the buzzing sound came from the ice and frost hitting the fan.

When the freezer gets cold enough, the "bi-metal" would turn off the cold and turn on a heater that removes the frost from the cooling coils. It is calibrated to go back to a closed state and turn off the heater then turn the cold back on. This may be a simplistic explanation-but it is how I understood it.
