The Earth was in an interglacial period of warming called the Sangamon Interglacial at this time period. The Illinois glaciation preceded it, and the Wisconsin episode of glaciation followed it. We are currently in an interglacial period known as the Holocene.
The Ice Age Trail was established in 1958 by Ray Zillmer, a conservationist and writer from Wisconsin. It was created to showcase the unique landscapes created by the last glacier in Wisconsin, known as the Wisconsin glaciation.
The presence of large ice sheets covering extensive land areas would be likely in a region of continental glaciation. This type of glaciation is characterized by vast ice sheets that spread over entire continents, unlike valley glaciation which occurs in mountain valleys and is more localized in scope.
