On January 30, 1933, President Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler chancellor of Germany. Although the National Socialists never captured more than 37 percent of the national vote, and even though they still held a minority of cabinet posts and fewer than 50 percent of the seats in the Reichstag, Hitler and the Nazis set out to to consolidate their power.
Sir Wilfrid Laurier was able to unite Quebec behind the Liberal party, while still keeping support throughout the rest of Canada. During the 1896 election, he and the Liberals were able to take advantage of the divisions in the Conservative Party over the Manitoba Catholic schools issue. Before this time, Laurier had worked hard, rising to become leader of the Liberal Party. He had to do his job as Leader of the opposition well, and gain trust with the Canadian population.

Georgy Lvov was the first post Tsarist leader after the abdication of Tsar Nicholas, from 23rd March to 7th July, 1917, when he resigned due to lack of support. He was arrested by the Bolsheviks later in the year, but escaped to France. Aleksander Kerensky was next from 21st July to 8th November, 1917, and was ousted by the Bolsheviks and a general lack of support. Vladimir Lenin was elected on 8th November, 1917, and served until forced to retire due to ill health in 1922.

Adolf Hitler was elected to the office of Chancellor (Head of Government) in 1933, assuming the role on the 30th day of January. He became the dicator of Germany on August 2nd 1934 when the party introduced the Enabling Act of 1933. His power was soldified in June-July 1934 during the Night of the Long Knives when Hitler executed many of his prominent political enemies in the government, claiming they had been involved in treasonous plots with the Sturmabteilung leadership.
