There was tremendous poverty among the peasants throughout the country. They were starving and this led to bread riots and protests in Paris. The sumptuous and ostentatious life style of the royalists at Versailles just 12 miles from Paris could not endure for much longer. The American colonies set the example with their successful revolution against the British monarchy. The House of Bourbon would be the next logical victim to succumb to revolutionary fever.
