Farming is arguably the most important revolution in our history. It was the catalyst for the transition from hunter gatherer nomadic tribes to stable communities staying put in one area. we stopped following the animals on their migrations and instead guarded our crop. This new method of getting food had many draw backs but it did provide better food security. This led to population growth. Villages, towns and eventually cities. And with all that came many concepts of modern society, like ownership, community, trade, religion, currency and even some new problems for mankind like war and disease. Because farming provided so much free time people could pursue new endeavors and this led to a technology boom. Which led to better farming practices and better means for war/defense. It also meant for the first time in our history a person could specialize in something such as a blacksmith and trade that service for food or something of wealth. All this simply boosted the need for farming and slowly it took over the world. It all started about 10000 bc and has led us to where we are now. Our society is still in total dependence on farming and one only need look at how we over fish the ocean to satisfy our food needs to see that if farms all disappeared there would not be enough food in the natural world to feed everyone. Farming is the reason for our success and also it is our crutch.
