However, when the Attack on Pearl Harbor occurred, it showed that even if the US wanted to stay out of the war, the war would not stay away from the US. A direct attack on an American military base was a declaration of war and could not be ignored. Even die-hard isolationists could not support a non-aggressive military policy after that. Thus, the political divisions between the two camps dissolved as the people formed a united front against the aggressors: the Axis powers.
