As the lava cools the ferromagnetic material in some rocks lines up with the Earth's magnetic poles. When these rocks move they are no longer lined up to the Earth's current magnetic poles, they produce anomalies in the magnetic readings. These rocks reveal their latitude of where they were when they cooled.
