It is impossible to know exactly how old the black race is, but it may be as much as half a million years old.

Skin colour is governed by a pigment known as 'melanin'. The more melanin produced the darker the skin. This is a natural feature of human variation, so people with black skin have been around as long as people with white skin. Truly white skin contains no melanin and only occurs very rarely (albino).
