They trace their origin to the Indus-Saraswati civilization during 4000-2000BC. They lived in the 700+ archeological sites discovered along the former Saraswati River that once flowed parallel to the Indus in present day north Indian states of Haryana, Himachal, Punjab, Rajasthan. They considered themselves to be descendants of Saraswat Muni, a Brahmin sage who lived on the banks of the Saraswati.
