Murder of Bernard Philips by Harold Berry 1946

No, Phillips was stabbed by Berry using a commando knife or bayonet. The evidence was overwhelming. Berry was identified as the man calling himself George Wood who applied for a loan of £50 from a Manchester Loan company and left with Phillips. Phillips had the money in five pound notes with him, they were later traced to London with Berry's signature on the back of them (a practice used in those days). A witness identified the weapon which he had sold to Berry for 10/- (50p) And if that wasn't enough, his mistress Irene Wynne told the court that the "Dirty Weekend" must have cost Berry more than £20 (almost £600 today) as he showered her with gifts and they stayed at upmarket hotels. His wage at the bacon factory in Winsford was less than £5 a week.
