What advantage did European countries gain by allying with a super power?

Western Europe had a distinct advantage in alliance with the United States and through NATO. American defense expenditures coupled with the Marshal Plan for reconstructing Europe allowed them to focus on social welfare rather then rearmament. The provisions of a American nuclear umbrella created further reassurances to deterring a Soviet land invasion into Western Europe. That being said France under Du Gaulle committed to their own independent nuclear deterrent.

What is Subsidiary Alliance system?

A subsidiary alliance is an alliance between a dominant nation and a nation that it dominates. The doctrine of subsidiary alliance was introduced by Marquess Wellesley, British governor-general of India from 1798 to 1805. In the beginning of his governorship Wellesley adopted a policy of non-intervention but later he adopted the policy of subsidiary alliance. By the late 18th century, powerful emperors had disappeared from the Indian subcontinent. and it was left with numerous weaker smaller states. Many rulers accepted this offer of protection by Lord Wellesley. Its main principles were:a) Any Indian Ruler accepting subsidiary Alliance with the British had to keep British forces within their territory and agreed to pay for their maintenance.b) In lieu of the payments, some of the ruler's territory was ceded to the British.c) The rulers accepting it were forced to keep a British official at their court called the Resident.d) Expel all non English foreigners from his state. if the Indian rulers failed to make the payment then part of their territory was taken away as penalty Under this doctrine, Indian rulers under British protection suspended their native armies, instead maintaining British troops within their states. They surrendered control of their foreign affairs to the British. In return, the East India Company would protect them from the attacks of their rivals. The Nizam of Hyderabad was the first to enter into this alliance. Tipu Sultan of Mysore refused to accept it but after the British victory in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, Mysore was forced to become a subsidiary ally. Later the Maratha ruler Baji Rao II also accepted subsidiary alliance in the Treaty of Bassein.

How did Louis XIV of France control the nobles?

This is somewhat of a long and drawn explanation. Louis XIV built Versailles for more than one reason. The two prominent reasons being that he wanted to show the world his power and riches through architecture, and to maintain control over the French nobles.Louis XIV had an interesting way of keeping the nobles there. He would call them one at a time, explaining a desire meet with them, and then he would continue to postpone them. He wanted to call them there without actually telling them it was to maintain power. This not only kept the nobles where he could see them, it also had the nobles at each others throats to please him and and caused fighting among them. This constant state of contention and bickering kept them from allying together against him in an attempt to overthrow him. It is honestly too bad that Louis XIV did not come about sooner, as Julius Caesar could have really learned something from him. Also, this question is tagged under "French Revolution". Due to the fact that this is a question regarding Louis XIV, it implies that you are referring to the time of Louis' reign/life time. Louis XIV was born in September of 1638, his coronation was in June of 1654, and died in September of 1715. The French Revolution was from the years 1789 to 1799, almost 70 years after the death of Louis XIV.

Was the assassination of archduke the main cause of world was one?

Europe at the start of the 20th century was a mixture of countries allying themselves with other European countries to ensure economic and military dominance. Britain, France and Russia had the tri-entente cordial agreement of mutual support which concerned other European countries in particular Germany which began an arms race in response to British Naval dominance and its growing fleet of powerfull new battleships. Combine this with the intense slavic rivalrys occurring in central Europe during the demise of the ottoman empire all in all made for a very unstable area. The assasination of Archduke franz Ferdinand gave Austria-Hungary an excuse to flex its military muscle by dominating its neighbour Serbia. consequently Russia came to the aide of its ally Serbia. In response to this, Germany supported its ally Austria-Hungary by declaring war on Russia. France and Great Britain joined the war in support of Russia. So yes the assasination of the archduke was the catalist for world war 1. however..... The political structure of Europe at that time was extremely fragile between the western European powers and a conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia was inevitable due to large scale ethnic rivalrys between the two countries. Therefore World war 1 would have probably happened without or without the assasination of the archduke.
