African country to gain

independence - it depends how

you count them.

Ethiopia has been an

independent country for at least

2000 years. It was invaded by

Italy for a short time until the

Italians were overthrown on 5th

May 1941. It's generally

regarded that Ethiopia has never

been colonized and as such this

makes it the oldest independent

country in Africa.

Liberia which was formed on

26th June 1847. However, it was

a newly formed country so it

didn't gain it's independence as

such. If you exclude Ethiopia

then Liberia is Africa's oldest

independent country.

Liberia and Ethiopia aside there

were 6 countries that gained

independence prior to Ghana...

South Africa - 31 May 1910 -

From the UK

Egypt - 28 February 1922 - From

the UK

Libya - 24 December 1951 - From

Italy

Sudan - 01 January 1956 - From

the UK and Egypt

Morocco - 02 March 1956 - From

France

Tunisia - 20 March 1956 - From

France

Ghana - 06 March 1957 - From

the UK

A full list can be found here (an

error on this states Libya gained

independence from Britain as

opposed to Italy)
