WW means World War and II is the number 2 in roman numerals.

WW2 or WWII stands for World War 2 or the Second World War.
World War 2 was a world wide war that affected many countries and continents. The Nazi Germans were responsible for the start of the war when they began invading, attacking and occupying countries in Europe. Their treatment of people and other countries was atrocious.

The Nazis killed 11 million Jews, Slavs, mentally ill, homosexuals and political prisoners. They placed these people in filthy, cold concentration camps. At these camps the people were murdered or made to work as slaves. This was dubbed "The Holocaust."

The Japanese had begun invading nations prior to the Germans doing their invading. They went to Manchuria China and killed over 100,000 people in a region where they wanted the mining ores, and raw materials. They went on a rampage to invade other places so they could gain more oil, raw materials and land. They killed people at will.

When they attacked the USA they bit off more than they could chew. They failed to understand the US could easily defeat Japan because of the sheer volume of men, raw materials, oil, and ability to put all that together to make a well fortified attack force. The US was able to crank out ships, planes, war implements and trained forces on an unprecedented scale. The US joined the Allied Forces with Britain and the USSR.

The Axis Forces (Italy, Japan, Nazi Germany) fought with the Allied forces from 1939 to 1945. Germany, Italy and Japan lost the war.

You can understand the scale of the war when you consider over 70 million people died in that war.

If you can get the History channel watch it. They have dozens of shows about World War 2 and they have a web site with videos you can see on their site.
