Bloody Sunday began as a peaceful march of petitioners to the Winter Palace in order to present grievances of the people to the Tsar for his consideration. The marchers sang songs of homage to the Tsar as they moved to the Palace indicating that they still held the Tsar in high esteem and most even saw the Tsar as almost a deity. However, when the Cossack cavalry rode through the marchers and when the Palace Guard fired their rifles into the crowd, they lost that feeling that the Tsar was their protector.

Fr. Gapon, the main organizer of the march later said "There is no Tsar." By that he meant there is no Tsar of the kind that the people thought he would be to them, namely their protector.
