What did they wear in the 1st century?

Both men and women wore tunics that were made of wool or linen. A man's interior garment was a short tunic with a belt surrounding the waist. The outer garment (mantle) was made of heavier wool and was used as a blanket at night. As there were no pockets woven in, purses made of leather were arranged and they were attached to the belt. Males wore woven caps or turbans. The women's tunic was longer than the males. It was frequently embroidered at the neck. They wore two outer garments - an upper mantle as well as a sack-like sleeveless mantle. The upper mantle covered the head and the upper part of the body. They could use it as a shawl, a veil or as a belted bag. Both men and women wore sandals that had a wooden or leather sole and had leather straps.
