Normal citizens in London in WW1 were put into National Service. Men over 16 were sent into the army if they were fit and well. Men who were ill, too old or had a disability were used as look outs. Sounding the alarms if enemy planes were spotted, making sure everyone's houses were blacked out, so no light showed through and looking after the local society really. Women had to take on mens jobs and children were evacuated from the cities to the countryside. Everyone had to do something for the war effort.
