Isaac Harris was one of the owners of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York, where, in the early 1900s, a horrible fire broke out, and 146 people died because Harris and the other owner, Max Blanck, had intentionally locked doors and exits to keep employees from stealing or taking breaks.
Because of the tragedy, New York became very progressive with regard to its labor laws. Some of the improvements that were implemented were shorter working hours for women and children, fireproofing, fire extinguishers, and better toilet facilities. In addition to other organizations, the American Society of Safety Engineers was formed.
