A newsreel is a short film or documentary on current events. It was a very popular way for people to learn about dramatic news events in the early days of movies; many people got much of their news from the newsreels that were shown in movie theaters before the featured film.
In the 1960s, newsreels lost their audience, since more people were watching nightly news shows on TV.
