I have read that "barba" means beard, but in this case refers to plants of the onion family (that were said to display "beards"). The -osa ending was used to indicate that something is widespread, so the name referred to a region where onions, garlic etc. were widely grown.

People in Spain sometimes took their names from the areas they lived.
