Currently, no party holds a majority of seats in the House of Commons. Her Majesty's Government for Canada (the Conservative Party) holds a plurality of seats (144), but must govern with the support of nine or more opposition members of the Commons on all key votes. Should a measure of confidence (i.e., any vote on a budget, a ways and means motion, or a key agenda piece of the Government) not pass, the Government would be considered defeated and would need to resign or seek a dissolution of Parliament.
the house of lords is where all the politicians meet, the house of commons is where ordinary people debate. No, the above is not strictly true: I refer to the bi cameral Parliament of the UK. The Commons is the principal House, and is where the government sits, made up of the elected representative MPs. The House of Lords is the upper chamber and has a role of overseeing the work of the Commons, it was originally made up of heriditary peers, but now is largely made up of Life peers & the Clergy. It is unelected.
The three major political parties in Canada are: 1. Conservative (in power with a majority) - leader is Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada 2. New Democratic Party (forming the Official Opposition) - leader is Jack Layton 3. Lliberal Party of Canada (also in Opposition) - leader is Bob Rae

In UK the PM is the leader of the largest party in Parliament, & is the person in leadership of the Government. The Leader of the Opposition is the leader of the second largest Party in the House of Commons & is politically opposed to the party in Government. Basically the PM governs the country & the Leader of the Opposition critiscises what the PM & the Government do.

In the UK, there is a Leader of the Opposition in both the House of Commons and House of Lords. The leader of the largest opposition party holds this position, which for the Commons and Lords is currently the Labour Party. Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour party, is the current Leader of the Opposition in the Commons. This role commands an additional salary to the parliamentary salary received as an MP. The Leader of the Opposition in the Commons picks a 'Shadow Cabinet' to follow the work of government departments. Baroness Royall of Blaisdon is the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords. This is according to parliament.uk.
The Speaker of the House of Commons oversees all proceedings that occur in the House of Commons. If the Speaker is not present, one of his deputies will be in control of the House's debates and votes.
