Peter the great's accomplishments cannot be underestimated. Through a series of drastic reforms he took Russia from an uneducated, agricultural society to a modern power, competitive with other European countries of the time.

He reformed Russia's:

-Church: became govt controlled

-Class Structure: based on service to govt, not birthright

-Women's Role in Society: he popularized balls and social events to bring women into public

-Military: Founded Russian Navy, strengthened Army, opened military academies

Gov't: Created western style senate

Negatives Impact of Reformations of Russian Society:

-People were taxed to near bankruptcy

-Russian culture, morals, and values were essentially wiped out

-Spirituality and religion disappeared from everyday life

-He transformed the upper class, but failed to do the same for common people

The reformations were to force liberation of arts, and sciences, also it was done too quickly for people to adjust.
