World War I was the biggest war in memory for the people during that time period. I believe they called it the war to end all wars. They hadn't had World War II yet, and so they though that World War I was going to be the biggest war in history for all time.
Taxes of the 14th century, and part of the 15th century, were high in England and France because of the Hundred Years' War.

I'm not sure if this was the earliest use, but there were land mines in the American Civil War. Precursors of conventional landmines appeared in the 15th century at the Battle of Agincourt in England.
During the 15th century, England was involved in several wars, including the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) against France, which had already been ongoing for over a century. In addition, England experienced internal conflicts such as the Wars of the Roses (1455-1487), a series of civil wars fought over the control of the English throne between the Houses of Lancaster and York.

The American war of independence was against Britain, not just England.
The biggest 20th century disaster is better termed the "greatest failure of leaders". The number one spot is Hitler's, with Tojo and Stalin in line after him. Clearly World War Two was the greatest failure of that century. An estimated 30 to 45 million people were killed by that horrible war.
The largest war memorial in England is the Chapel at Charterhouse School, Godalming, designed by architect Gilbert Scott and consecrated in 1927.
