In 1793, Jean Pierre Blanchard, a Frenchman, claimed to have escaped from an exploded hot air balloon with a parachute. However, this was an unwitnessed event.
However, it is reported that the Italians were the first to deliberately drop soldiers behind enemy lines via parachute.
