York is a ancient walled town in Yorkshire, England. The name is derived from the Viking name of Jorvik. New York is named after the Duke of York whose relationship with the town of York was somewhat vague.
The Duke of Wellington got his name from the Shropshire town (not the other way round). His name was Arthur Wellesley and when he was made a duke, his brother already had the title of Lord Wellesley, so he chose Wellington. The boots were so called because they were styled on his riding gear. There are two suggestions about how the town's name came about. One is that it is from old English 'Weoleahington', meaning a settlement by a holy place. The other suggestion is that it is a corruption of 'Watling Town' because it lies on the old Roman road called Watling Street.
Texas, down on the Queensland/New South Wales border took its name from the nearby "Texas" sheep station, which was the largest landholding in the area at the time when the town was founded in 1842.
