Ralegh's settlement in what is now North Carolina was on Roanoke Island. It became known as 'the lost colony'. It was designated the Cittie of Ralegh, but the name never quite took hold because the colony failed.

Sir Walter Raleigh landed on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina and started a colony called Roanoke. Also living on the island were the Croatan indians. Sir Walter Raleigh had to leave the Island to go back to England. When he came back, Everyone was missing.

CORRECTION: Ralegh NEVER came to Roanoke Island. He organized and invested in the first two Roanoke voyages, but by the time the third one was organized he had pretty much removed himself from the venture. Governor John White was the man who headed up the third (1587) voyage and he was the person who returned to England. Upon his return to Roanoke Island in 1590 his colonists were nowhere to be found. Walter Ralegh did not come to Roanoke Island.
