You ask, "What were the goals...?"

Why not, "What are the goals...?"

To me, it would appear that romanticism - the culture of romance - dictates the acting out, within the purview of (vaguely) identified societal norms/morays, in which men and women present desires for romance.

Bottom line: the most powerful drive in (almost) all species of animal, and most vegetable organisms is the unceasing urge to reproduce. I proffer that romanticism is (simply) the need to couple, at least for the purpose of producing progeny sufficient to carry the species on into the future.

Having (subliminally but effectively) reduced lofty and beautiful notions of romance to little more than copulation as a survival instinct, I ask only that you consider this: Whether for lofty or base purposes, sex is fun!

(Of course, I realize that I didn't get even come close to responding to your (very well thought out) inquiry. Nevertheless, I thank you for allowing me to ramble along in my own inimical style!)
