During the WWII the United States and it's allies received a great deal of support from corporations such as Montgomery Wards. The company was ran by Chairman Sewell Avery who had things under control until President Roosevelt (FDR) created the National War Labor Board in 1942. However, in 1944 Avery refused to comply with the collective bargaining agreement terms with the unions. Then Avery, being ousted by the board of directors refused to leave his office. A second vote was held with the same result of ousting as Chairman, but he refused to leave. Roosevelt decided to call the National Guard and have him physically removed, which was caught in a photo of Avery being carried out by guardsmen while still sitting and grasping onto his chair. That photo made the front page of the media and folks said that Avery looked like a "Monkey" the way he was slouched in his chair with his arms hanging on, but dangling down. From then on, Montgomery Wards got the nickname of "Monkey Wards".
