∙ 11y agoWhen the Canadian government decided that they wanted to build the Canadian Pacific Railway; there weren't enough people working on it, and so they allowed Chinese people to immigrate to Canada to work on the railway. The Chinese were treated poorly - they were paid less than the other races of people who also worked on the railway, and they were given the dangerous jobs, such as setting up explosives, pouring explosive chemicals, etc.

The above post suggests they were ignorant or backward people without will or abilities, or just mindless slaves. This is not true at all. They were and still are smart and quick to take advantage of a situation.
They came by ship to earn more money than they could at home and to live in a less crowded land of plenty.
Today most fly here for pretty much the same reasons.

∙ 12y agoCanada's population is shrinking and getting older. The government is supposed to pay for the standard and living health care for and the old citizens. The coming of immigrants will increase the number of employment in Canada which will provide the nation's government with enough money to continue supporting citizens and to take care of it's economy.
