Short term events that the Ottomans felt forced their country into war were that they were poorly lagging behind in trade with Europe, many previous defeats caused territory loss to Europe and due to the Annexation of Bosnia and Harzegovina. The Ottoman empire was defeated during World War One and later became modern day Turkey.

No. However, the man who designed it, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, originally wanted to put the statue at the entrance to the Suez Canal, in Egypt.
