Although Newfoundland had many European settlers between the time John Cabot discovered the island in 1497, includng English, French and Portuguese, and 1583 when Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed Newfoundland as a British colonny, it was John Guy who brought colonists over from England in 1610 to establish a permenant settlement. It was Jacques Cartier that explored Canada and claimed it for France. When arriving in the region the area was then known as Newfoundland. It was in 1534 when Jacques Cartier arrived in the area now known as Canada.
