Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, was a French military officer born in the province of Auvergne in south central France. Lafayette was a general in the American Revolutionary War and a leader of the Garde Nationale during the French Revolution.

The Marquis left France to help Patriots in the American Revolution. (He was one of the richest men in France.) Soon, he got command as a general without pay and became one of Washington's best and favorite generals. He was a good man and kind to his men. He was wounded in action in the service of the Continental Army.

After the Revolution, he returned to France and was a key supporter of the French Revolution, but didn't like how it went. Lafayette was imprisoned during the French Revolution and America but most importantly, Washington was not able to free him. He was moved to several prisons mostly throughout Prussia.
