The poor Victorians would live on the streets, but if they were found by the bobby's (police) they would get taken to the workhouse where they would have a cruel life, they would try to escape but if they got found escaping they would be put into a shed where everyone can see them. Trapped Forever. This is not entirely true, workhouses were cruel often, but a better alternative than living on the streets. It was mostly families that went into workhouses
The people were treated poorly at workhouses.

Workhouses were abolished because they were seen as inhumane institutions that perpetuated poverty rather than alleviating it. They often subjected inmates to harsh conditions and were considered outdated in terms of providing meaningful support to those in need. As welfare systems developed and societal attitudes changed, workhouses were gradually phased out in favor of more compassionate and effective forms of social support.
Workhouses in England were abolished in the early 20th century through the Local Government Act of 1929. The last workhouse in the UK closed in 1930.
