Cartier and Hudson were explorers, both seeking what was known as the Northwest Passage. They both went further north in an attempt to find this.

The Hudson's Bay Company stopped looking for new sources of fur because the Native people were delivering fur to the trading posts, causing them to not need to go out to find it.

They needed to land within the Virginia Company's territory, but they wanted to be as far north as possible. Of course they ended up even farther north and in New England territory.
