Why did countries back then try to conquer other countries?

Countries were power-hungry back then. They wanted power, wealth, land, resources, etc. (much like today, except modernized). There was also Social-Darwinism amongst the Europeans, in which they believed their race was superior to all and they should rule among the other people. Competition also arose between the great European powers (UK, France, Germany, Russia, Italy, etc.) over centuries which led to many wars and territorial acquisitions.

When the Spanish encountered native peoples in the New World the main reason the Europeans dominated was .?

Europeans were able to dominate the Native Americans because they were mostly meeting with people who had a subsistence type of existence. They adjusted to changes in weather, over worked fields and other elements by moving from place to place. The European culture was more acquisitive, and the Europeans looked for ways and means to provide a consistent living through trade of furs and other commodities for things they needed for survival. Besides the basic seeds and stock, Europeans brought over items to sustain the early startup of their civilization. Europeans took over open lands that the Indians were not using seasonally, causing disruption in the lives of the natives.

What advantages did Europeans have over people elsewhere in the world during the late 1800s?

At the time Europe was home to the most powerful and richest empires of the time: Austria-Hungary, Germany, Russia, France and Great Britain. Over the centuries, European countries had become master of all the major trade routes and of all major world trade, were masters of the richest Asian countries like Indonesia and India and had made themselves 'protectors' of most of Africa. Other advantages were that Europe - together with the US - was way ahead of the rest of the world in the field of technology and weaponry. And the ruthlessness with which European countries pursued their goals and set out their strategies usually had them several steps ahead of whoever they were dealing with at any point.
