Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina, by Gavrilo Princip. He was a member of a group of assassins organized by The Black Hand.

Their intention was to force the separation on the south-Slav provinces from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and to turn them into a separate state under the name Greater Serbia or Yugoslavia.

As Germany were allies of Austro-Hungarian Empire (the Central Powers) they were caught up in the ensuing war of retribution against the Triple Entente Powers who were allies of Serbia.
