The world didn't necessarily go to war in 39, Germany just was rebuilding their military and starting what would be known as the Holocaust. Until late 39 was when Germany's panzer divisions and luftwaffe would storm into Poland, France, and attempt to take over Britain (which failed). It wasn't until Poland did France and Great Britain declare war, not actually fight. France didn't even put up a fight. Britain was just kind of there but not actually across the English Channel, constantly going on bombing runs. U.S. started to use their Airforce in about middle of 1940, and then obviously with Pearl Harbor in 1944 we were in complete war with Germany, Italy, and Japan.
