Roman Emperor Publius Aelius Hadrianus was raised under the guardianship of his relative Ulpius Trajanus and married Trajan's grand niece Vibia Sabina in 100. He participated in both Dacian wars, as governor of Syria he was proclaimed Emperor in 117.

Hadrian immediately terminated the conquest policy of Trajan and dedicated his reign to internal realm reinforcement. In a peace contract concluded with the Parthian King he refrained from territories Trajan had won earlier, bloodily turned down a rebellion of Generals and forced the opposing Senate to accept his defensive policy. To foster it he built the Hadrian's wall in northern England in 124 AD and the Limes wall in Germany. He reorganised the administration, reformed the recruiting system, founded towns, supported the farmers and uniformed the legislation.

His favourite town was Athens which he expanded and embellished. As a real Graecophile he was the first Roman Emperor to wear the philosopher beard.

Hadrian died childless, his successor was Antoninus Pius whom he had adopted.
