As to subject matter , portariture is not reliable , as most people have an idealized view of themselves, and artists wished to get more commissions, so they did representations that flattered the sitter.Some historic battles etc, are outright frauds, usually because of the person who paid for them , but sometimes, by misguided loyalty or patriotism.
