When the slaves were taken from western Africa, there weren't formal countries in the European lines-on-a-map sense. The area was known by Europeans as the Slave Coast and Gold Coast. The area covered was roughly from what is now Senegal to what is now Nigeria - look at a map of Africa to see what area that covers.

The trade route from Africa to the West Indies is called the 'blood passage' because slaves were picked up in Africa and taken to the West Indies. Slavers used to pick up far too many slaves for their ships to hold and so many died on the journey or were thrown overboard.
