There are actually two very main characters in Twilight, Bella and Edward.
Bella: a 17 year old girl who moves in with her dad so her mother can go with Bella's stepfather to try and make it into a pro Baseball league. She moves to the Forks, Washington, and goes to a new highschool.
Edward: a 17 year old boy who has a dark secret. He is really over 100 years old because he is a vampire. He lives with his vampire family and also attends Bella's highschool. They become lab partners and start to fall for each other.
They later become intertwined and love each other dearly. And those are the main characters in Twilight. ( and sorry if this is a long answer.)

It depends on the reader. In my personal opinion. I liked the vocabulary, and how the author described the settings in the Twilight book. But, the plot, I sensed was cliche (Again in my own opinion). Anyway, it is a good books to read, but the fact that it's not portraying the stereotypical Vampire nerved me. Eclipse, I must in my opinion was the best one of them all. When Bell (Narrator, also main character), finally realizes she has feelings for Jacob (Also, another main character), but has a dilemma; because she has feelings for the Vampire Edward (Main character). The Twilight book has that 'going into different world' facade about it. Good read, though. I loved how the trill and description of twilight also the characters in twilight were interesting.
In the Twilight series, Bella Swan is a normal human being.
Bella Swan is the main character although she is closely followed by Edward Cullen.
