Warning, this may contain a spoiler for Long Shadows...Hawkfrost created the trap for Firestar's death so Brambleclaw could become leader alongside him and they could rule the forest. But in the book Long Shadows, during the fire scene, Ashfur told Squirrelflight that he had helped deliver the message to Firestar because he wanted Squirrelflight to suffer unbearable pain for accepting Brambleclaw as a mate instead of him.
