It all depends on the type of essay you're writing. It may be persuasive, compare/contrast, descriptive, cause/effect, narrative, critical, etc. In any case though, you would begin the essay with a lead, a sentence or two that would get the reader hooked and wanting to know more. The lead may be a short anecdote, shocking statistics, a quote, or any other interesting beginning, as long as it relates to the point of the essay.
