Alice was in a mental place because she had visions. James had caught her scent and like Bella was to edward, her scent was better than everyone elses. To stop Alice being killed by James, an old vampire turned her and then James killed the old vampire because he was angry with him. so basically Alice was nearly one of James's victimes.
