He resorted to that to get food he needed. Although it wasn't the right choice, perhaps, it had nothing to do with Tigerstar. (However, Tigerstar did pounce on this opportunity to insult kittypet roots. 'Once a kittypet, always a kittypet.' Gosh darnnit, Tigerstar - quit hating the kittypets. ;) )

This information was revealed in Warriors Super Edition 2: Bluestar's Prophecy. His ancestry is quite interesting, he and Spottedleaf are believed to have descended from SkyClan because in the book "Firestar's Quest" in the Prologue a she-cat with kits decides to go to ThunderClan for fear of a dangerous journey for her kits after SkyClan was driven out. So Tigerstar/Tigerclaw is half-clan (1/2 ThunderClan & 1/2 SkyClan)
