Ralph called the meeting to discuss the urgent need for a signal fire on the island in order to attract potential rescuers. This meeting was also used to address the concerns raised by the group about the lack of organization and order on the island.

Ralph called a number of meetings, including the very first one. One memorable one was immediately after the fire had been allowed to go out on the mounatin top and they had missed the chance of rescue. Ralph spoke about a number of things and then allowed debate on the issue of 'the fear.' This essentially amounted to an attempt to finally but to rest the rumours about 'the beast.' Unfortunately Ralph chose the wrong time to hold the meeting. A combination of the rapidily declining Sun along with speculations about unknown sea creatures resulted in a vote in favour of the existence of ghosts, and by implication also of 'the beast.'
