Simon is what's known in literature as the "Christfigure". His plot line is very similar to that of Jesus from Christian mythology and often peacefully confronts the key antagonist (and dies in result). This is shown primarily when, on page 56, Simon helps the littl'uns get the fruit they couldn't reach. Another example is his encounter with Beelzebub, the Lord of the Flies starting on page 143.
