Conch Shell- symbolizes order and civilization. When it is broken at the end, this signifies the end of said civilization
Ralph's mask (at the bonfire party)- is red white and black. These colors together symbolize terror and violence.
Piggy's glasses- also symbolize order and civility. When they are commented on, it is usually a sign that Piggy is about to say something intelligent. At the beginning of the novel, his glasses are intact and he can see clearly, as can the rest of the boys. Throughout the novel the reader will notice the rate at which piggy's glasses are slowly destroyed, and ultimately stolen, parallels the rate at which the boys become more and more savage.
The boulder- the boulder that kills piggy, and crushes the shell, is also a symbol. In literature boulders typically represent power. The fact that the boulder is red, however, also makes it a symbol of violence.
The impact of the plane- leaves a "scar" on the island, as mentioned at the bgeinning of the novel. This symbolizes man's negative impact on the earth.
The five characters that hold the most meaning are Ralph, Piggy, Jack, Simon, and Roger. Ralph represents order, leadership, and civilization. Piggy represents the scientific and intellectual aspects of civilization. Jack represents unbridled savagery and the desire for power. Simon represents natural human goodness. He has been likened to Christ because of his semi-sacrificial death. Roger represents brutality and bloodlust at their most extreme.
To the extent that the boys' society resembles a political state, the littluns might be seen as the common people, while the older boys represent the ruling classes and political leaders.
