In the shuttle, Ender gets praised by Major Anderson, at that point the other launchies don't like him. One launchy known as Bernard flicks Ender several times in the head, so Ender breaks his arm. An officer stops by Enders home the next morning and offers him an opportunity to go to battle school (which is in space.) the reason why Ender went to battle school is because he felt like he didnt have a place on earth to fit in.
